Field Review

One of the things we enjoy most about cooking with bioethanol is its simplicity. There are no pressurised fuel canisters, no valves to adjust and no moving parts to maintain. The Vesuv Hotspot 30 embraces that philosophy beautifully whilst introducing an important refinement that immediately distinguishes it from many traditional alcohol burners.

At the heart of the stove is its carbon felt absorbent core. Rather than allowing fuel to sit freely inside the burner, the carbon felt absorbs and securely retains the alcohol, significantly improving safety. When filled to the recommended maximum capacity, the stove is effectively non-spill. Should it be accidentally knocked over before or during use, the fuel remains held within the carbon felt rather than immediately spreading across the ground. It is a deceptively simple engineering solution that provides genuine reassurance when cooking outdoors.

The carbon felt also contributes to the stove's excellent performance. During our testing, the Hotspot 30 consistently bloomed quickly and produced a stable, even flame throughout the burn, delivering dependable and predictable performance every time.

Although compact, the 30ml fuel capacity is more than sufficient for the vast majority of solo cooking tasks. During our own testing, we found that approximately 18ml of bioethanol was sufficient to bring 500ml of water to a rolling boilwhen used with the Evernew Titanium UL Pot 0.9L and the Vesuv Outdoors Titanium Windscreen in sheltered conditions. This level of efficiency impressed us and demonstrates just how effective a thoughtfully integrated cooking setup can be.

For meals that benefit from a gentler heat, we often recommend using less fuel. In our experience, a reduced fuel volume naturally produces a slightly smaller diameter flame, offering improved simmer control whilst also reducing fuel consumption. It's a simple technique that makes the stove surprisingly versatile beyond simply boiling water.

Another quality we particularly appreciate is its reliability. There is virtually nothing to wear out, nothing to adjust and very little to maintain. Simply add fuel, light the burner and cook.
